Sustainable cast glass jewellery and sculpture with a coastal connection
for eco-conscious sea swimmers and sailors
Amy is pro-glass over plastics. Having grown up on the coast of Dorset, on the sand and in the sea, she is a water baby. Inspired by weathered rope & rusty chain, connecting the earth to the oceans. Amy creates colourful cast glass chain combined with sustainable materials for jewellery & sculpture that doesn't cost the environment.
Amy frequently beach cleans and has combined the sea plastics with glass to create meaningful sculpture. As part of the Green Maker Initiative and a member of Surfers Against Sewage, Amy is actively looking for ways to sustainably improve her systems of making these include;
Using recycled & recast glass.
Combining 100% recycled cotton or hand woven hemp cord with cast glass to create colourful jewellery.
Lowering her carbon footprint with steam & reuse of wax instead of using the traditional 'burn out' method.
Reduced consumption and waste by collection & reuse of pre-fired mould material in new mold mixes.
For 12 years Amy has worked at Plymouth College of Art and taught most aspects of glass, glass cutting, surface decoration, etching, painting on glass, stained glass, fusing with colours, shaping, mould making and kiln casting. This has put Amy in a great position of being approached by publishers Crowood Press Ltd. to write a practical book called Glass Casting. The 36,000 word book, published in 2019, includes easy to follow step by step guides with photographs of glass casting processes; from open casting to lost wax casting and core casting glass. Amy has had many opportunities to travel and learn glass. Significantly being the recipient of scholarships to attend & study at Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, USA and North lands Creative in Lybster, UK. As a teaching assistant Amy has experience of working at both of these establishments too. Being a student provides an appreciation for the generous and focused tuition that a course provides. Amy thrives on being able to share her passion & skills for glass process with students in her studio.
